Our New and Current Programs

The Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces is proud and excited to introduce its new programming!

PROJECT LEARN

Project Learn consists of five components:
  1. Homework help and tutoring enables Club members to develop the daily habit of completing homework in a safe, quiet, allocated space with staff and volunteer encouragement for five to six hours weekly.
  2. High-yield learning activities help youth practically apply what they learn in the classroom. Young people are encouraged to make positive and productive choices about how they spend their leisure time through fun activities that involve reading, writing, math, games, community service and discussions with knowledgeable adults.
  3. Parental involvement is a process of empowering the adult members in a child’s life to support his or her academic development. This process not only informs adults of the child’s progress, but also provides programs and information that enable parents to assist their child at home.
  4. Collaboration with schools helps Clubs work with teachers and develop individualized plans for Club members to build their competency in challenging subjects.
  5. Incentives are a means to reward Club members for positive academic participation and encourage parental involvement. Project Learn Components are offered daily

SMART MOVES

The SMART Moves (Skills, Mastery and Resistance Training) prevention/education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. The program uses a team approach involving Club Staff, peer leaders, parents and community representatives. More than simply emphasizing a “Say No” message, the program teaches young people—ages 6 to 15—how to say no by involving then in discussion and role-playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influences. The ultimate goal: to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior. SMART MOVES is offered once a week.

HEALTHY ME!

The Healthy Me! Club was created in order to help school-ages children (5-10 years) learn important health tips. The ideas and support in the curriculum are not intended to “take the place” of the parent or guardian but rather to assist in attention to health needs. Lesson Plans are non-judgmental and culturally sensitive. Facilitators lead discussions where children provide the answers for themselves. Each lesson is self-contained so that a complete thought is developed and concluded at the end of the session. HEALTHY ME! is offered once a week.
